The first generator on our list is a simple-to-use unit from Westinghouse. It is a dual fuel model which means it can be used with gas or propane, ideal for those occasions when you run out of fuel. If you’ve miscalculated your propane supply while camping then gas is a handy back-up as it can be obtained quickly and easily from most gas stations. It’s also a useful feature if you find yourself needing fuel at temperatures where propane becomes less effective (below 20 degrees Fahrenheit).

The generator itself is relatively compact, at approximately 23” x 23” x 21”. This makes it good for both camping and home workshops where it can be stored easily and neatly when not in use. A TT-30R 120V 30A outlet means that no adaptors are required for use with an RV. It also has a 5-20R 120V duplex outlet and a L5-30 30 amp outlet.

At 109 pounds in weight, the generator is quite portable. The solid frame which comes with it has handles at each end and detachable wheels for easy manoeuvring. The Westinghouse WGen3600DF is a great choice for camping or short-term emergency use at home. It is easy to store and relatively inexpensive and overall it’s an excellent option for the size. However, it might not be powerful enough for some situations. If you are looking for a long-term generation or a way to power a home then you might need something bigger.

At 194 pounds, this unit is heavier than most of the portable generators we have looked at. However, the steel frame and wheels make it relatively easy to handle and the added power it produces is worth the inconvenience of the weight. It measures just over 27” x 26” x 26” so is small enough to store away when not in use. The frame feels solid enough to stand up to a lot of use and the wheels help with moving it around.

Like all gas-powered generators, this one will need regular maintenance and cleaning and you should never store gasoline in it for more than a few months as it can begin to degrade. The advantage of the propane attachment is that you can keep the long-lasting fuel on hand, adding gas only if you need extra power or a temporary top-up.

The Champion 3800 watt generator can be started with the push of a button, with the added the option of a pull cord starter in case of a flat battery. The dual fuel engine has a 3.4 gallon gas tank and the package includes a propane hose to link up to a propane tank. You can switch between the two using a dial on the front control panel. A full tank of gas will allow for up to 9 hours running on a 50% load and 20 lb. propane tank will run to 10.5 hours.

The Champion 3800 has one 120V 30A RV outlet, one 120V 30A locking outlet, and two regular 120V 20A household outlets. It’s a good all-rounder for home or workshop use or camping. With an output of 4760 starting watts and 3800 watts, while running, it is powerful enough to run basic home equipment such as fridges, freezers, televisions, and lamps so it is an excellent back-up in an emergency power situation.

It weighs close to 120 pounds so is heavier than some models and might prove difficult to lift for some people. At just 59 dBA, it is the quietest generator on our list by a long way, making it the best option for anyone who doesn’t want to sound of their generator to affect everyday life. It is perfect for camping in a tent or RV without disturbing your neighbors

The wheels are useful for moving the generator around when it is too heavy to lift (at close to 100 pounds, lifting it is manageable but not easy). However, the size and position of these makes them unsuited to rolling across soft grassy or gravel surfaces. This can make life on a campsite or outdoors difficult as you need to keep to flat surfaces. The low position of the frame makes it tricky to drag across uneven ground without damaging the outside and gravel tends to stick in the wheels and around the chassis. It is best suited to hard surfaces where possible.

A separate fold out handle can be used to manoeuvre the generator when using the wheels. There are also two strong handles on top which can be used to lift the unit – these are reinforced with metal bars to take the weight so do not try to lift with the rolling handle. The propane only generator is one of the few we recommend which runs exclusively on propane and does not have an option to switch the fuel source to gas. The machine is simpler than a duel fuel generator and therefore easier to clean and maintain. As propane is the fuel of choice for preppers and anyone who wants to store their own supply in case of emergencies, a simple single fuel generator is enough for most. There is also no need to worry about gasoline dripping, leaking or degrading in storage.

With 3250 running watts and up to 4000 surge watts, this little tank is easily large enough to power basic household or camping and RV essentials. There are three outlets (two 120V AC and one 12V DC) which are enough for basic household use. It’s a good mid-sized generator which will be more than enough for emergency power in poor weather. It runs for up to 10 hours on a 50% load on a 20lb tank of propane.

Due to having no gas tank, this little generator is the most compact on our list. The small size (23” x 17” x 17.5”) and relatively light weight (just 88 pounds) make it extremely portable and very easy to store when not in use, even if your space is limited. It does not come with wheels so some users may struggle to move it easily if they are not accustomed to the weight. It is likely to be run irregularly and for short periods of time and will probably be used for powering essential items.

It is worth noting that AC and heating units are quite power-intensive and larger units might require 3-4000 watts to run. If you plan to power your whole home from you emergency generator then need a higher power output than if you are content to run a few basic essentials for a short time.

Off Grid Living / Prepping

If you don’t know what the surface area is, simply multiply the width of the room by its length and — voila — you have got yourself your square footage.

Moving on to the BTUs. The basic rule is that it takes around 20 BTUs for a standard portable air-con to cool down a floor space of one square foot. So, a room of 300 square feet or less would need around 10,000 BTUs. By the same token, a 500-square-feet room would need 10,000 to 14,000 BTUs, and a room of over 500 square feet — 14,000+ BTUs.

As you can see, this is not an exact science. The figures above are general approximations. In real life, just how big of an A/C unit you need would be affected by many other factors, including:

The outside weather and season of the year
The quality of the building’s isolation
How often and for how long the door and any windows stay open
Whether or not you have another A/C system in the room
The amount of sunlight that enters the room during the day
The height of the ceiling
How many people there are in the room at any given moment
Any running kitchen or electrical appliances
Whether or not you plan to move around your portable A/C unit to other parts of the building, or will only keep it in one room
The temperature in the adjacent rooms

Nevertheless, the BTU estimates above should give you a good idea of what to look for and where to start.

Allow for Necessary Adjustments

No two rooms or buildings are the same. Therefore, you may have to make some slight adjustments to the BTU estimates above. Here are some things you need to consider:

If the room has plenty of natural light coming in during much of the day, you should increase your BTU score by 10%.
In contrast, if the room is somewhat shaded and gets little to no sunlight, you should reduce your BTU requirement by 10%.
If the ceiling is higher than 8 feet, increase the BTU by 10% for each extra foot of height.
In case there will be two or more people in the room on a regular basis, add an extra 600 BTUs per person to the score.

In the end, you should have a pretty accurate estimate of the required BTU capacity of your air-con, or, in other words, how big of an A/C unit you need.

What If You Miscalculate Your BTU Requirement?

If your portable air-con unit has a lower BTU score than what your room requires, your A/C system will start to run non-stop cycles. That, in turn, will overwork the unit and shorten its shelf life. If the disparity between the size of the room and the unit’s BTU score is too large, the A/C could even break. What’s more, your room will remain too hot for your liking, and your electricity bill will skyrocket.

Nevertheless, don’t make the mistake of buying an air con with a BTU rating that is much higher than necessary. When it comes to A/C systems, too much is just as bad as too little.

Using an aircon that is way too powerful for the room it’s in will only reduce its lifespan. First, the unit will cool down the room too quickly. It will then turn itself off, only to power itself back on way too soon to restart the entire process.

However, their biggest downside is that they’re usually designed for double-hung windows.

Portable AC Units

Central AC Units

Central AC units push cold air through ducts that are behind our ceilings and walls, and they can cool an entire house. But they do need to be professionally installed since they’re extremely complex machines.

Also, central units can be pretty expensive because they require pre-installation evaluations and modifying or installing ductwork. For all of these reasons and more, the prices of central units can range from $1,500 up to $7,000.

Important Air Conditioning Terms

Before buying any AC unit, it’s important to understand some of the more technical terms.

To start, most rooms in our home will have a circuit rating of 15 A of electricity. So unless we can get a dedicated line for our unit, it should be less than that.

Also, if the room we’re installing the AC unit in has high humidity levels, it should be able to combat that. Since most of these devices can remove between 1 to 10 pints per hour, this should be an important deciding factor.

How to Install a Garage Door Opener for Beginners

Manually opening and closing your garage door can be quite inconvenient. Luckily, you don’t have to do it yourself! With this simple guide, you can learn how to install a garage door opener. Then you’ll never have to fuss over opening or closing the garage ever again.

Preparation — Get the Garage Ready

In case your garage is relatively new, you shouldn’t have any problems. But it’s better to be safe than sorry, so make sure the mechanism of the door is well-oiled. The garage door opener doesn’t do any heavy lifting. If you have trouble opening the door, so will the door opener.

Also, make sure you have an electrical socket for the motor of the door opener. We’ll mount it onto the ceiling, so we’ll need an outlet there.

Note that if your garage door is old, you may have to replace it before you install a garage door opener. Most old single-piece doors are not compatible with garage door openers.

Choose a Garage Door Opener

When buying a garage door opener, we should always consider its durability, noise level, and maintenance. You can consult this article for in-depth reviews and product recommendations if you haven’t chosen a device yet.

Installing the Garage Door Opener

If you want to install a garage door opener, it’s best to come equipped with both tools and patience. The installation is not hard, but it will take a few hours. Let’s get started!

Take Out the Motor and Assemble the Rail

There are two main components to our new garage door opener. One is the device itself. Take it out of the box, and place it on the ground. It’s best to use a towel or a blanket underneath.

The other component is the rail. It usually comes divided into several segments that we have to put together.

The rail that has to go first has a dedicated window for the pulley, so it’s easy to recognize. Lay it down first and check that the tab is facing up. Then put the other parts of the rail together.

Now we should have one long rail. Place a small box under the front end of the track, and rest the other side on top of the garage door opener.

Slide the Trolley onto the Rail

The front part of the rail should have a small opening. Hang a screwdriver through it to use as a marker.

Next, we have to slide the trolley onto the rail. It will come to a halt where the screwdriver is.

Attach the U-Bracket at the Rear End

With the trolley on the rail, we can now add the U-bracket at the rear end. Make sure to put in the ¼ inch pin into the rail and use a nut to hold it in place. The bolt will secure the U-bracket to the rail.

Now, if you look at the garage door opener, you will see a nut and a bolt marking where the U-bracket should connect. Loosen them, place the bracket on top, and fasten the bracket onto the garage door opener. The nut and the bolt should go back in the same spots we took them from.

Add the Idler Pulley

Our next order of business is the idler pulley. It looks like a small wheel with a line of tape on top.

Remember that little window we mentioned earlier? Take the belt (or chain) and put it through that window. Pull about one foot of it to the other side of the rail.

If we remove the tape of the pulley, there should be a glob of grease in its center. If it’s empty, add some oil. Then slide the idler pulley through the small window in the rail, behind the belt, and use bolts to fasten it to the track.

Fix the Belt

Now we can go to that upward-facing tab on the front rail and bend it upwards using a screwdriver. Then, connect the belt to the trolley. The belt should have a small hook to grab onto the trolley. Notice how the tab we raised is preventing the carriage from sliding to the front.

We can now unfold the entire length of the belt. Place the belt along the rail. Then, run it through the pulley that is attached to the motor, and all the way back to the front.

Finally, pin the belt’s end to the rod provided in the box and attach this rod to the carriage. We can test the pressure with our hands. You should be able to put one finger between the belt and the rail, but not more than that. Lastly, put a cap over the rear pulley of the belt and tighten it to the motor.

Affix the Rail and the Motor to the Garage

At this point, we are ready to attach the mechanism to the garage. Follow the instructions your garage door opener came with to measure where to install the header bracket. Then, bolt the bracket according to the instructions.

Next, use a clevis pin with a ring fastener to attach the front of the rail to the bracket above the garage door.

Now we need to elevate the garage opener motor using a ladder or some boxes. You have to either install the brackets where you measure the opener would go or repurpose the brackets from your old device if you had one.

You have to put the supporting brackets into the actual wooden pillars of your garage ceiling. Otherwise, your entire construction will be unstable.

(Optional) Add an Emergency Release System

It is also good to install an emergency release to the garage door opener. We have to attach a small rope to the trolley, as well as two brackets.

With the garage door fully closed, measure the straight and curved brackets. You may need to cut the straight one if it’s too long. Then, fasten the straight bracket to the trolley and the curved one to the garage door. Secure the two arms together with bolts.

Connect the Wires to the Motor

The last step is to connect all the wires to the motor of the garage door opener, add a light bulb, and put a lid on it. And voilà! You just learned how to install a garage door opener!
